In Amstelveen, police regularly find persons in possession of material to break in during checks.

Burglars known to the police in Amstelveen who are repeatedly found by the police during checks to be in possession of material to break in may now be fined €2,500. These persons are known to the police because of previous burglaries they have committed inside or outside Amstelveen.

By imposing an order under penalty, the municipality and police want to deter burglars. Mayor Bas Eenhoorn: "The number of residential burglaries has unfortunately risen again in recent times. In addition to everything we are already doing together with the police to reduce the number of residential burglaries, the imposition of heftier fines when burglary material is found can additionally help deter burglars."

If the police arrest a person who is in possession of burglary material and that person has previously been arrested for burglary in the past two years, the suspect will receive a conditional fine of 2,500 euros from the municipality. If the same person is found to be in possession of burglary material again at any time in Amstelveen, the fine will actually be imposed. The amount of the fine is also used in other municipalities, where this measure has been introduced before.
