In 2016, 41 fatal house fires claimed 47 victims. More than half of those house fires took place in a flat or block of flats. And in more than six in 10 fatal fires, no smoke alarm was present. This reports the Insurers' Association.
The figures come from the Fire Academy's 2016 Annual Review of Fatal House Fires. According to that annual review, by far the most fatal fires occur on Fridays (28 per cent) and half of them start in living rooms.
The academy cites smoking (19 per cent) and technical causes of equipment (13 per cent) as the main causes. About half of fatal fires arise from human action.
Singles
The vast majority of victims in 2016 were single people (69 per cent) and almost three quarters were male. Just over half are 61 years or older and exactly the same percentage (51 per cent) were found in a room whose door was open when the fire brigade arrived. Reason enough for the Burn Foundation to warn earlier this autumn to close (bedroom) doors before going to sleep. This is because closed doors slow down the spread of smoke in the house and give you more time to escape.
